Students who are in Year 8 in the 2014/2015 academic year will be the first to sit the new GCSEs graded 9-1 in Computer Science.

This document aims to take an impartial look at the specifications for each exam board to help schools choose which course is best for their students.

It gives a comparison of each of:

  • OCR Computing (from 2012)

  • AQA Computer Science (from 2014)

  • OCR Computer Science (DRAFT: from 2016)

  • AQA Computer Science (DRAFT: from 2016)

  • Eduqas Computer Science (DRAFT: from 2016)

  • Edexcel Computer Science (DRAFT: from 2016): Many thanks to Tim Brady (Subject Advisor for Pearson / Edexcel) for mapping other exam boards to this specification. Mapping the other way round hasn’t been done yet (this will be an activity on the hub on 8th July)

The first sheet shows an overview of how each course is assessed.

The remaining sheets let you see each topic and learning objective for each of the four courses above with a colour coded and numbered grid that shows if the topics are also taught in the other courses.

I hope that this will be useful for people deciding which course to run but I’m sure that there will be omissions or errors - please comment (or amend and re-upload) if you find any.

This resource will be the starting point for discussion at the Secondary York CAS Hub on 8th July 2015 when we’ll look through the specs and the specimen exams / assessments.
