What is Decrypting Computer Science?

A professional development programme designed to take IT teachers with no technical background and give them the confidence and competence to start teaching Computer Science.

Course Content

The course will cover the fundemental theory of computer science and teach the practical programming concepts. Delegates will engage in practical lab sessions and lectures. There will also be home learning tasks in order to consolidate learning and 'take-away' lesson plans for delegates to use in the own classrooms. Below is a brief overview of some of the topics covered.

  • What is Computer Science?
  • Hardware: CPU to Storage
  • Data: Bits, Bytes and Binary
  • Software: OS and Application
  • Networks: Packets and Protocols
  • Internet: ISP to DNS
  • Programming 1: Algorithms and Pseudo Code
  • Programming 2: Data Types and Operators
  • Programming 3: IF Statements and Loops
  • Programming 4

Why You Should Get Involved

  • Computer Science is on the government agenda and is here to stay
  • There is a serious shortage of skilled Computer Science teachers
  • IT teachers are concerned about the expectations that are / will be placed upon them to teach Computer Science
  • Michael Gove has indicated that Computer Science will most likely be added to the E-Bacc.
