Dear Enthusiastic Computing Teacher,

Welcome

Welcome to the newsletter from your CAS Regional Centre: Lancaster University. We hope you had an eventful first half of term and are resting with your feet up and a cup of coffee!

Blackpool

After a last minute change of venue we had a very successful first Teacher Training day for Primary Teachers in Blackpool City Learning Centre. We had workshops on the micro:bit, raspberry pi, e-safety, codebugs and drones. We also broke out our box of toys to give teachers ideas for teaching Computing in the primary classroom.

Master Teachers

We're delighted to welcome Mark Capaldi from Sharples school as a new Master Teacher to the North West area.

GCSE Taster Course

From Tuesday 8th November we are running a 4 week course here at the university on GCSE Computing starting at 4.15pm for 2 hours. The course will be run by a mix of local Computing teachers and Lancaster University staff. It is not an exam board course but a skills update for those relatively new to teaching Computing who want to learn more about the subject. Topics to be covered will include algorithms and programming, and computer systems and architecture.

Places are limited. If you wish to attend please email us asap: caslancaster@computingatschool.org.uk

Bebras Competition

Registration for the 2016 Bebras competition taking place in the week of 7th -11th November is now open. The deadline for registration is Monday 31st October.

The Bebras challenges are made of a set of short problems called Bebras tasks and are delivered online. The tasks are fun and engaging. They can be solved without prior knowledge but instead require logical thinking. It is a free and wonderful way to assess children.
